Taking things for granted ?

A discussion about converts telling their stories about how they converted to Islam made me wonder, how I take many things for granted just because being born as a Muslim. Just because.

Mualafs have their own interesting stories, the hard struggling journey they had went through. The hardships facing challenges, but some did not have a hard one, but an easy, smooth one, alhamdulillah. The conversion forum was held in conjunction of the Islam Awareness Week (IAW) which is being held this week by MSA, Vanderbilt University. Oh, the full story of each of them can be read here. Credits to Amar, for his interesting tell-back stories of their journeys.

Here's some of the points that our brothers and sisters gave :

by Sis Meriam Ventura :
  • -the life of Prophet Muhammad pbuh was a peaceful and simple one
  • -a verse from Surah alFatihah which says that Allah is the God for all the worlds.
  • -people of the book believes in the same One God which is Allah
  • -polygamy in Islam : If a man wanted to marry more than one woman, he must treat each wives equally. This issue amazed her because she never thought that religious books could have talked about polygamy and men.
by Sis Lana Lockhart-Ezzeir :
  • -Quran answered all her questions regarding science. There were never enough questions to ask till she found the Quran.
  • -amazed by the scientific terms used in the Quran, how it can talk about the 'expanding universe' and embryology in a mothers womb.
by Bro Coby Mayers :
  • -was employed by a Muslim so he learned about a practising Muslim's lifestyle and was amazed by it.
  • -amazed by the unity of Muslims during their prayer.
  • -awed by the diligence of Muslim students and parents.
by Bro Nuruddeen Lewis :
  • -Islam found him
  • -the similarity of Islam and Christian
  • -there was no image of God
  • -asked why Jesus wasn't son of God, was pointed to the bible : Jesus himself prayed to a God, so he can't be a god. So, why would he pray in the name of Jesus.
  • -was amazed by the Quran, was positively sure that it is the wording of Allah, not man-made.
  • -the daily 5 prayers. Praying shoulder to shoulder, unite even though people from different backgrounds.

For me, I tend to take these things for granted, just because I was born as a Muslim. I regret doing that, unconsciously, yes I tend to forget. That's why I think that each person has to go through an individual journey by him/herself to search for the true meaning of existence, being a khalifah. Searching for the truth.

Even though we may call ourself a Muslim, a practising one too but what about deep down inside?

Where does our heart truly lies?

p/s : do correct me if you find anything that needs to be corrected. =) Thanks.
