Sisters Social Shindig

Sisters Social Shindig was one of the activities that was held in conjunction of the Islamic Awareness week which was held last week. I apologize for the late update.

It started at 630pm at the Black Cultural Centre, Vanderbilt University. Punctuality was always a problem and we had to start the program at 7pm because it was then that majority of the people who planned to attend, came. Majority of the people who attended was the Nashville Muslim community. I had the feeling of going to ICN, during tarawikh prayer, or maybe Eid, when all the Muslim community gather and meet each other. It was nice, the atmosphere was pleasing and the place that we got to use was splendid. Credits to the MSA crew who worked hard for it.

At 7pm, we prayed the Maghrib prayer, Nazirah leading. Then there was a speech given by Sister Tasneem regarding Sisterhood. I'm sorry I didn't took notes, I was taking photos. Then it was the ice breaking session when we get to know each other, it was a great experience, meeting other people and realising that we actually have met them before but haven't been properly introduced. There was Sister Amani, which was one of the sisters who attended the Intro to Islam Class by Dr Awadh under the Olive Tree Education Program. She actually works at the Biomedical Library and had just moved into Nashville, a couple of months ago. Only one non-Muslim came to the event, which was Veronica, I think she was Dayana's friend, because she seems to know Dayana, and she was very comfortable with us all. She's very friendly and nice too, asking politely and complimenting on the food that was cooked by Nadia, Shazia and their Mom.

Talking about food, the menu was : Beriyani rice with Zabihah Chicken, Samosa, some white souce(forgot to ask what's the name), home-baked cookies!( baked by Najlaa), some snacks and some drinks. We were very full that night and I really enjoyed the Samosa, which reminded me of home, of the Samosa kat Pasar Malam. Ah..teringat!

Then it was the skit, well, maybe a sketch, er..sketsa? It was about back-biting, which was one the topic that Sister Tasneem covered during her talk, in the beginning of the event.

Well, I guess I should introduce the actresses first : Mohsinah, Amearah, Dayana and Izzati plus Maryam as the director+ script writer. Nazirah and Azreena as 'the people who talked about back-biting in the end'.

The Skit was like this. Amearah, Mohsinah, Dayana and Izzati were friends. Amearah and Izzati were best friends, well they like to hang out together. Well, it was like after they met each other(all of them) they go their separate ways. Dayana and Mohsinah were talking bad about Amearah and Izzati; Dayana and Mohsinah were also talking bad about Amearah and Izzati. Basically they were talking bad about each other and Amearah was saying that Mohsinah was smoking pot last week.(which I learned was doing drugs) which was not the truth at all. Izzati went to ask Mohsinah if that were true, which obviously wasn't. Mohsinah, on the other hand replied by saying that Amearah also said some things that were bad about Dayana and Izzati. Finally, Mohsinah wanted to end her friendship with Amearah and wanted to get even with Amearah by doing something bad to her at the MSA meeting. Well, she did do something, she pulled the chair that Amearah was suppose to sit, which caused Amearah to fell down. Then Nazirah and Azreena came in and gave their speech.

*The End*

Perempuan ada 9 nafsu dan 1 akal, lelaki ada 1 nafsu dan 9 akal.
Which made me wonder.

I guess everything went well, alhamdulillah eventhough some of the lines were made up during the act and Ramy, Amearah's little brother came up on stage, tugging on Amearah. The act had to go on, and Yasmine saved the day by holding back Ramy.

this is Ramy by the way

After that, we prayed Isyak, and there was a group activity. We were divided into two groups, each members of the group had to remember each of their teammates and then the name of the teammates of the opposite group. After remembering, one from each group was picked, when everyone was closing their eyes. Including those who were picked. Each of the two who were picked had to turn around in the count of 3 and say the other person's name. The one who guessed wrong had to whisper to the other's ear a word so that the other could draw it on the board and the teams had to compete to guess the answer. The game lasted for quite some time, and I think both teams had even scores. I'm not really sure because I had to leave early that night because I had and obligation at 11pm. At 1030pm, I left.

All in all, The Sisters Social Shindig went well indeed. It was great, and I hope there's going to be another one coming up, well, I think if it's going to be another event of the Islamic Awareness Week, maybe next year, but that's the only time when majority of the muslim students could gather together and meet each other.

Sorry if the photos are blur. I don't really know what's wrong with my camera. Some of the photos here were also took by Azreena and Amalina. So, the credits should also be given to them. =)

The Hikam of Imam Ibnu Ata'illah al-Iskandari.

" Better to look at the defects hidden within you,
than to look for the unseen worlds that are veiled from you.

Better to keep the company of an ignorant man,
who is not satisfied with himself,
than a man of knowledge who is satisfied with himself.

What knowledge does the self-satisifed scholar have?
What ignorance does the ignorant man who is not self-satisfied have? "

Theorist or Observer ?

We were learning about Kepler's Law during Physics yesterday. Professor Albridge was talking about Tycho Brahe who was the mentor and J. Kepler, the mentee. Kepler made some Laws without knowing what they actually mean, untill the time of Sir Isaac Newton, the laws were derived to be right which are accordance to Newton's Law and law of gravitation. Well, I really am interested in astronomy and these guys contributed great things in the astronomy field.

But, what I really wanted to talk about was the statement that my professor made.

" One will spend a lifetime to be a theorist (explaining what the astronomical objects mean - taking Sir Isaac Newton & J. Kepler as an example) and a lifetime also to be an observer (observing the coordinations of the planets, stars, galaxies etc - in accordance to Tycho Brahe). One can't have two lifetimes in this world (Except for the hereafter that is, but.. that's another story). So, one can only be either a theorist astronomer or an observing astronomer but not both. "

Well, this made me realise that I can't be both an observing astronomer and explaining what they mean in the same time. The maths and theories are gonna be complicated.

The three laws were :

-each planet moves in an elliptical orbit, with the sun at one focus of the ellipse
-a line from the sun to a given planet sweeps out equal areas in equal time
-the periods of the planets are proportional to the 3/2 powers of the major axis lengths of their orbits

Taking things for granted ?

A discussion about converts telling their stories about how they converted to Islam made me wonder, how I take many things for granted just because being born as a Muslim. Just because.

Mualafs have their own interesting stories, the hard struggling journey they had went through. The hardships facing challenges, but some did not have a hard one, but an easy, smooth one, alhamdulillah. The conversion forum was held in conjunction of the Islam Awareness Week (IAW) which is being held this week by MSA, Vanderbilt University. Oh, the full story of each of them can be read here. Credits to Amar, for his interesting tell-back stories of their journeys.

Here's some of the points that our brothers and sisters gave :

by Sis Meriam Ventura :
  • -the life of Prophet Muhammad pbuh was a peaceful and simple one
  • -a verse from Surah alFatihah which says that Allah is the God for all the worlds.
  • -people of the book believes in the same One God which is Allah
  • -polygamy in Islam : If a man wanted to marry more than one woman, he must treat each wives equally. This issue amazed her because she never thought that religious books could have talked about polygamy and men.
by Sis Lana Lockhart-Ezzeir :
  • -Quran answered all her questions regarding science. There were never enough questions to ask till she found the Quran.
  • -amazed by the scientific terms used in the Quran, how it can talk about the 'expanding universe' and embryology in a mothers womb.
by Bro Coby Mayers :
  • -was employed by a Muslim so he learned about a practising Muslim's lifestyle and was amazed by it.
  • -amazed by the unity of Muslims during their prayer.
  • -awed by the diligence of Muslim students and parents.
by Bro Nuruddeen Lewis :
  • -Islam found him
  • -the similarity of Islam and Christian
  • -there was no image of God
  • -asked why Jesus wasn't son of God, was pointed to the bible : Jesus himself prayed to a God, so he can't be a god. So, why would he pray in the name of Jesus.
  • -was amazed by the Quran, was positively sure that it is the wording of Allah, not man-made.
  • -the daily 5 prayers. Praying shoulder to shoulder, unite even though people from different backgrounds.

For me, I tend to take these things for granted, just because I was born as a Muslim. I regret doing that, unconsciously, yes I tend to forget. That's why I think that each person has to go through an individual journey by him/herself to search for the true meaning of existence, being a khalifah. Searching for the truth.

Even though we may call ourself a Muslim, a practising one too but what about deep down inside?

Where does our heart truly lies?

p/s : do correct me if you find anything that needs to be corrected. =) Thanks.

Games and Din

I was quite surprise when Din messaged me through Y! messenger some weeks ago saying that he's not playing games anymore, and I'll be astonished if I knew why. It's a favourite topic: Games and consoles. To talk with him, if he calls or messages. But now, I wonder, what would we talk about?

I haven't held the PS2 controller for quite some time. Missing it? Yup and my schedule's been pretty tight. And I seem to have lost the passion to play games or maybe there wasn't a chance?

Gaming is a broad topic and the implication depends on the individual themselves. One can't say for the other, because one is not the other. So, I am not going to write an entry about the issue of gaming, I'd love to but I'm not in the mood right now.

I was influenced with games from my brother since I was a child, since Standard 4, I guess. Before, I thought that games were only for boys and why would girls want to play games, it's a boy thing! Oh, it's because of FF8, which he played in 1998 on the PC. I always sat beside Din, watching him play and sometimes playing for him, (well, just leveling up Squall, or Zell, or Rinoa). Maybe because of the great storyline I stayed watching beside him through night and through day. Well, we do take breaks to sleep. Since FF8 is an rpg game, it took 30 hrs + to game it. So, he only plays it during the night and weekends, but I usually ask him to call me when there is cg-movie after the end of a battle or so. Then it was FF7, and so on.

Playing the game is better than watching the game itself. I started playing Golden Sun II which was a gameboy game on Din's GBA during PMR. And I managed to game it before the exam itself. Gaming a game before your brother is like a very high accomplishment for me. So, that was my motivation to play games. And trying to game it before Din. Sibling rivalry?

Absolutely! Well, not in gaming only but also in academics, unfortunately I haven't managed to beat him YET. We're even for all the exams though and for achievements too. Him in his field and me in mine. People knowing you because of your brother is a normal thing for me. But I guess that's because he's older than me and that's why people know him before me. Being under his shadow for quite some time is not a nice experience but it is an experience nonetheless, and thinking back. It's quite funny for me to think about my brother the way I did then.

upsr, pmr, spm : same results. He even was offered the same scholarship by Mara to study at Vanderbilt !

All in all, I do think Din is better than me, cause he's older and knows things that I don't know myself. And he speaks English fluently (well, he was an English debater) that's for sure.

So, I guess Din did influenced my life after all, with his passion for games back then.

Err..this post was suppose to be about games. But, it seems like I've written more about my brother after all.

So, back to the topic. Here's some of the games that I've gamed @ played so far :

When Butterflies Leave

When butterflies leave their silk palaces
The scent of the garden blows towards Heaven's way.
Like the toils of man,
Those who work to tomorrow
Will not miss the dreams of yesterday

Gardening. A hobby indeed.

Spring's here and it's gardening time! Oh, and it's spring break too. Remember in KH where we have to learn about 'sains pertanian' in the sp section in the KH textbook (well,I took ERT for sure) but these basic things need to be known too and because it comes out in the PMR examination (not forgetting plumbing, engine, electric circuits, pertukangan etc).

Well, this is Bella Luna which I bought in my early days here :

And now I'm transferring it into a new pot.

Taking Care of Flowers
  • Check your flowers daily. Add new water mixed with fresh flower food every other day.

  • Remove any leaves that fall under the water line in the vase. Submerged leaves rot and create bacteria, shortening the life of your bouquet.

  • Trim the stems under water (cut diagonally with a knife) every few days. This prevents air pockets that form inside the stem and block water uptake.

  • Display your flowers in a cool, shady place — away from drafts, heat generating appliances, and sunlight.

  • If your flowers are wilting, re-cut the stems under water. Then submerge them in a tub filled with cool water. Allow them to soak for 15 minutes before replacing them in the vase.

  • To revitalize: Dip the flower stems into a cup of vodka or gin for up to five seconds, then replace into fresh water. If only the blooms are drooping, use a pin to prick the stem just beneath the flower.

Tips for Specific Flowers
  • Dip rose stems into peppermint oil before placing them into water.

  • Add a tablespoon of white vinegar to the water for anemones, lilies, and gladioli.

  • Drop a pinch of salt into the water for roses, snapdragons, and violets.

  • Mix two teaspoons of sugar or lemonade to water containing asters and delphiniums.

  • Drop a penny into a vase filled with tulips.

Future Uses for Flowers
  • Dry flower heads and crush them to make potpourri. Add scented oils.

  • Dry entire flower bouquet. Add a ribbon and use as a wall hanging.

  • Use rose petals in a romantic scented bath.

  • Use petals in a clear lamp or vase as a decorative piece.

And flower-pressing is a hobby too. Well, since alia gave me a flower-pressing kit for my 18th birthday. It's been fun, although only Bella Luna's flower that I only 'press'. Got to wait for the real spring season when flowers actually bloom, maybe then I could pluck some flowers (The ones that look like they're gonna die though. It'll be cruel just to pluck them off for no reason.)

[Surah Al-An'aam;99]

It turned out to be..?

Having high expectations are not good. You should always be prepare for everything. Well, I guess they could have done better. It was informative but, I expected more. Nevertheless, everything went well, alhamdulillah.

Many people showed up and it was quite a full house. I was supposed to take care of the booth, but since I had a test the same day and fell asleep practically right after the test ended, which I didn't do too well; I came there late. Which was okay they say because no one did but any of the calendars yet. Well, only two calendars were sold that night to tell you the truth. The calendar was sold at $USD 15. Quite high don't you think?

I was one of the person in-charge of selling the calendars, and I also attended the meeting when they were discussing abuout the price that should be put on. They actually bought those calendars for $USD 10 each, but they wanted to sell it for $USD 15. And the reason was that it's gonna be a financial gain for the association. I pity myself, I should have said something, but I didn't. Why? Because I said to myself, cause I'm still new, I'm just gonna listen and learn. But sometimes maybe one should speak out when one needs to. Guess I learned a lesson that day.

Here's a clip I'd like to share. It's quite interesting actually, spending 7 mins 41 secs for a clip isn't that long right?

It's funny how Muslims would sell things to other muslims at a higher price just for the sake of 'fisabilllah'- as they call it?

Coming back to the original topic, I listen to the talk that Dr. Octar Babuna gave, he is a neurosurgeon by the way, originally from Turkey(Mohsinah, Amearah and I accompanied he and his companion to his black Lexus as [said by Mohsinah], so all of us had a little chat with them on the way there) if I'm not mistaken and managed to sneak out to check on the booth ( which Sumayyah and Amearah were taking care of). I met a friend there too, he didn't come there for the talk though but because he was suppose to have a meeting at the lecture hall where the talk was held. I promoted the calendars, but I guess he didn't bought some cash, so he had to decline buying them. Well, that's just my assumption. We talked for quite sometime, untill the question and answer session was finished and everyone else came out. He asked, what did I do outside of class. I hesitated for a moment cause I don't know myself, what do I do besides studying and homework. Blogging? Well, not as often as some others. Reading? I haven't even finished reading Rebecca du Maurier which I borrowed since last winter break. And the only thing that crossed my mind was playing games. Rpg games. I told him that I was a gamer, which he took it suprisingly. I know, I don't look like the gamer-type person. Unfortunately that was only half true, I was a gamer, because I haven't played for quite sometime, am I still called a gamer? And I don't even own ps2 here, have to borrow it from someone if I want to play.

But, the question lingered till this day. I mean, what do I do besides homework and studying? Nothing in a particular, I guess. A little of this and a little of that, but not finishing either. (which is not a good thing). Okay, so that habit should be changed immediately for me to a better person and I also think that is one of the factor why I can't focus while studying, I seem to want to know every single detail, but in the end, haven't even read the topic that will be covered which had to be read in last minute.

That was only a friend asking, but what if my life was taken away by Sakaratul Maut, what would my answers be when I am asked by the angels in my grave?

(do correct me if either of these 6 questions are wrong)

  1. Siapakah Tuhan kamu?
  2. Siapakah Nabi kamu?
  3. Apakah agama kamu?
  4. Siapakah saudara kamu?
  5. Apakah pegangan iktikad kamu?
  6. Dan apakah kalimah yang kamu bawa bersama-sama kamu?

I also learned something else too. They don't like to take photos. The girls that is. I'll have to keep that in mind for future events.
